My Access Abroad Announces New Documentary, Portraits de Français en Chine : les coulisses de la vie à l’étranger on the Real Lives of French People in China

After spending a full year living in Beijing and fully immersing ourselves in the local culture, we are proud to announce the launch of a new original amateur documentary series exploring what life in China truly feels like; far from headlines, stereotypes, or preconceived ideas.
This project was born from a simple conviction: the best way to understand a country is through the people who live it. Over the past year, we travelled through Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Shenzhen to meet French professionals, students, entrepreneurs, artists, parents, and long-term residents who generously shared their life stories with us.
The documentary focuses on storytelling capturing real emotions, challenges, and discoveries. Each portrait offers a window into the everyday moments that shape an international life: navigating cultural differences, building community, adapting to fast-paced cities, and finding belonging far from home.
This documentary is important because China is often talked about, but rarely understood on a human level.
Through authentic voices and lived experiences, this film aims to:
- show the nuance of life in China beyond clichés,
- highlight the diversity of French experiences abroad,
- bring forward real stories that inspire, inform, and demystify, offer a more grounded perspective on international mobility.
Our goal is not to explain China from the outside, but to share how it feels from within through the eyes of those who experience it every day and from different backgrounds.
This documentary is supported by the En Amateur program of the Institut Français de Chine (IFC), which encourages creative projects that foster cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
The documentary will be released on myaccessabroad.com, along with exclusive clips and behind-the-scenes insights.
More details and the official release date will be shared soon. Stay tuned and get ready to discover China through the stories of those who call it home.
